How much should I offer my overseas remote staff?: One of the most challenging things I have experienced with offshore hiring is how much to offer the candidate. On the one hand, you want to offer an attractive package to attract talent and retain their commitment over time. On the other hand, you don’t want to over-spend on your limited budget and lead to shortage in other expenditures. In other words, it’s about identifying the supply-demand equilibrium, finding that middle ground between how much the candidate thinks he/she is worth and how much you think the candidate is worth, with caveats such as the minimum salary level candidate can accept to sustain his/her lifestyle, and the maximum you can allocate from your budget. Finding that balance point is almost an art, but we usually have market knowledge accumulated throughout our own careers to help us do that.

The question becomes more complicated when your candidate comes from a market you are not familiar with – all your accumulated market knowledge became redundant. Suddenly your budget becomes abundant in comparison to overseas salary, but you still don’t know what’s an appropriate level of package or offer, or how the salaries increase in correspondence to experience. That’s why we have gathered some general information and displayed them graphically according to different professions and countries for your convenience. You can expect the range to imply candidate experience and seniority as well, if not specified in the job title.

It is important to note that the salaries presented here do not represent the total payables by the employer as depending on the arrangement total payables could include cost of using an employer of record, variable compensations such as bonuses, commissions, ESOP, and additional business allowances such as travel, car, phone and internet.

Australia

First of all, this is what you can expect if you hire onshore from Australia.

South-Eastern Countries

In comparison, the salary ranges for South-Eastern countries such as Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam are a lot lower, with the highest paying country (Malaysia) paying around one third to half of what’s being paid in Australia. This huge difference in salary ranges is primarily attributed to the difference in the economical strengths between the countries, with Australian economy being much stronger. The comforting news is although the foreign salaries seem low from Australian standards their cost of living is also much lower compared to Australia, so the salaries are sufficient to cover their living standards.
